When a writer explodes the moment, they let their individual style take over. The reader can get a sense of how the writer tries to relay his or her message or story. Also, the reader can get a better sense of the writers tone when they explode the moment. Practicing this technique can help a writer develop their individual style and help them find their voice. Exploding the moment is something I have learned to do. I love this technique and really enjoyed the exercise we did it class to help us with it.

Amy Tan's essay, Mother Tongue, is about how as a writer she makes developed her own style as an author. She decided to make her writing simple and straightforward; but it took her a little time to find that this was the style of writing she was going for. At first Tan felt that her writing needed to be super intellectual and complex but once she decided who her audience was and focused on that, she mastered her tone and style.
Throughout the whole movie, Mommie Dearest, there is a gloomy and cynical vibe. Joan Crawford often went off on Christina for the littlest things. For example, Joan freaked out on her for using wire hangers to hang up her clothes and started beating her with them. Another time, Christina was just having fun playing by imitating her mom and Joan got upset and cut off all of her hair. It is these kinds of things that are all throughout the movie that give it that sad, disparaging feeling.

In White Oleander, the tone of the movie is serious and dark. The music in the movie gives it a haunting feel. Throughout the movie Astrid is being moved from home to home and you see how drastically it affects her. Her mood is reflective in the overall tone and mood of the movie.
The documentary, Grey Gardens, has a very unique style to it. It is about a mother and a daughter living in this house out in the East Hampton's known as Grey Gardens. We discussed many reasons as to why the mother and daughter are stuck there. One reason we said is because they are comfortable with their lifestyle. Although the daughter often talks about leaving, she blames being stuck there on her mother because she says she has to take care of her. There relationship and interactions are what give this film a corky tone and style.

The short story, Girl, has a very unique, distinctive style to it. Kincaid writes the piece using concise sentences made up of mainly commands and advice, separating them by semi-colons. This story has a harsh tone to it but at the same time caring. I really enjoyed this story. It was very different from anything I had read.
This American Life: Mother's Day podcast is a collection of stories about different topics concerning mothers. Most of the time there was a very informational but conversational tone. At times there was a humorous tone such as when children were talking about how they can imitate their mothers perfectly. This is humorous because it is something everyone can relate to; everyone can imitate some aspect of their mom whether it is how they talk, what they say, or something they do.
